Stealing

I will do a bit of brain math - I will show my work.
I graduated from high school in 1997, that was a 4 year school and I didn't flunk so that means I started -
wait -
If I graduated in 1997, then I became a Senior in 1996, so that would mean that I was starting as a Freshman in the Fall of 1992.
Is that right?
Well - I suppose the set is sufficiently staged.
In the Summer before my freshman year started my neighbor Chad was riding his bicycle to school for football practice.
Chad went to football practice via bicycle in the late summer to prepare for the sports season.
This was mandatory for athletes, a good reason I would not be one.
Chad's younger brother Scott and I, (same age and grade) decided from boredom one day to also ride our bicyles to the high school with no plan further than maybe watching practice and stopping at the local market Sokols for a shared coke or stolen candy.
We watched the players and coaches all leave the locker rooms and jog through one full field and to the field further away.
Scott and I at first walked the halls, watching for janitors or anyone left hanging around. When we realized the coast was clear, we brought our bicycles inside and started racing the halls and pealing out on the gymnasium floor.
By the end of the first day, we knew there was a Janitor, but that in classic janitor style, he had a boombox playing music attached to his cleaning cart. We could hear him coming. The school was pretty big. Summer was pretty long. The bicycles became bicycles and skateboards.
The riding around became rifling through desks for change, became rope-towing the skateboarder with the bicycle, became too close a call.
Summer ended and classes began -
Scott and I were the only freshmen who know where every classroom was before day 1.
We helped kids find their rooms, like the kind good boys we were.
